Discover Kumana National Park – A Hidden Wildlife Sanctuary in Sri Lanka
Kumana National Park, nestled on the east coast of Sri Lanka, is a breathtaking destination for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers alike. Renowned for its massive flocks of migratory birds, the park is also home to elephants, leopards, crocodiles, and spotted deer, making it one of the best national parks in Sri Lanka for a jeep safari.
A Kumana safari tour takes you through serene lagoons, lush forests, and scenic grasslands, offering visitors the chance to witness rare wildlife in their natural habitat. The diverse ecosystem includes mangrove forests, ancient water bodies, and open plains – perfect for nature photography and peaceful exploration.
The best time to visit Kumana National Park is from April to July, when migratory birds arrive for the nesting season. However, the park offers year-round wildlife sightings and remains relatively untouched compared to more crowded national parks.
Whether you're a bird lover, a wildlife photographer, or simply looking for a tranquil escape into nature, Kumana promises a raw and authentic Sri Lankan safari experience in one of the country’s most preserved wilderness areas.

We met Sandu spontaneously at Crocodile Lake. He picked us up with his tuk-tuk and showed us a few crocodile resting spots.
The next day, we went on a half-day safari with him in Kumana National Park. Sandu told us interesting facts about each animal we saw. It was really fun and informative.
We can definitely recommend the experience and would do it again anytime.
Sandu truly cares about the animals and reports to the park authorities immediately if any of them seem unwell. There is also no chasing or disturbing of leopards during the tours.
